In the spirit of St. Raphaela, we are encouraged to reach out and help others with our gifts and talents.<br />
<br />
Students prepared a varied program of music and dance. The First Communion students danced reverently in their white dresses, while the schola sang along. The Gr. 3-4 choir shared songs from around the globe. The Gr. 4 students performed on their recorders. The SASA Monday dancers performed "Singing In The Rain." The residents joined in for the popular song "Do Re Mi." Finally, all the students performed their flash mob mash-up while many of the Trust Garden staff danced along.<br />

We are grateful to all who helped us with chaperoning on that day, especially parents who took time out of your schedules to come to school.<br />

Fourth graders worked hard this year adjusting to new expectations for writing, and today they shared some of the products of that hard work during a Writing Celebration at the end of the day.</span><br />

They learned that often times impressionist paintings have exaggerated colors and obvious brushstrokes. Landscape paintings were also very common during the impressionist movement. Inspired by the sakura outside, they painted a landscape of Mt. Fuji with a sakura in the foreground. They focused on the elements of texture, color, and space. </span><br />

Sometimes we record our thinking carefully on the text, as a whole class, with partners, and individually. The fourth grade is currently in the How We Express Ourselves unit of Expression Through the Arts. This week we looked at some famous pieces of abstract art by Jackson Pollock, Piet Mondrian, and Wassily Kandinsky. Focusing on the elements of art used, we tried to interpret the mood and the artist's message. The fourth graders have become very familiar with the elements of art and presented in "expert groups" about an element of art. </div>

Fourth graders designed toys using electric circuits and materials such as motors, lights, batteries, switches, and wires. As collaborators they worked in partnerships to create a toy that was functional and interesting to play with. </span><br />

Fourth graders built paper bangers, gas machines, flying plates, and paper windmills. As they played, they observed what form of energy each toy had and how that energy was transformed into a different form of energy. </div>

After observing how energy was transformed in each toy, they begin to experiment with variables and tested out their own questions. One questions was "Which material will make the loudest bang?"</div>

They found that in order to create a fair test it was important to keep certain variables the same and to change the variable they were testing. To find out which material made the loudest bang, ask your daughter about the results. </div>

Although the Convention on the Rights of the Child has been signed by most countries in the world, it is our responsibility to ensure that rules uphold rights for all. Fourth graders have been working together to explore Human Rights, specifically looking at the <a href="https://www.unicef.org/rightsite/files/rightsforeverychild.pdf" target="_blank">Convention on the Rights of the Child created by the United Nations</a>. Throughout this unit they have used their research skills to learn about different organizations that exist to support and uphold children's rights. While learning about these organizations, they have become aware of the responsibilities that we all have to make sure the rights of all children are upheld. <br />

The story is a fictionalised account of a real life. Charlotte Parkhurst lived in the United States during the mid-1800s. She became a legendary stagecoach driver and the first woman in the state of California to vote, despite the fact that both activities were prohibited to women at that time. Charlotte broke the rules by pretending to be a man. Most people did not know "Charley" was a woman until after her death.</span></div>
